Description

For the book : Vanity of Vanities – A (Speeches A’-D’)

The phrase “vanity of vanities, all is vanity” has become part of our daily lives. It comes from the book entitled “Ecclesiastes”, a work by the wise Solomon. But what does this phrase mean? The equally wise hierarch, Saint Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, will lead us in the search for the answer. Although it does not extend to the entire work, only from the beginning to chapter 3, verse 13, in his eight Homilies, following the allegorical way of interpretation, he delves into the great problem of the vanity of worldly things in relation to the eternity of God and the salvation of the soul. What he generally points out is: Let man not stand in awe before any of the earthly things (wealth, glory, power, amusements, pleasures and everything else considered important). But he sees that all this has an end, which is vanity, and which does not ensure any real benefit. “There is no profit under the sun for those who strive for it, whose end is vanity” (Eccl. 2:11).
