Training of body and soul: selected patristic excerpts :
On the occasion of major sporting events, especially the Olympic Games, there is much talk about the exercise of the body and the high performances that it can achieve, after hard and long preparation (training). The great Fathers of our Church, taking as an example the few but significant hagiographic references, often speak of the dual constitution of man, who is body and soul, and therefore has the need to exercise the body and exercise the soul. Never forgetting, however, that the first is perishable, and the second is incorruptible and eternal, as is natural, they attribute greater importance to the exercise of the soul. In the selected 146 excerpts of this issue, the dual constitution of man is discussed, the physical prowess, the mentality that distinguishes the competitors, the benefit of exercise, the need and results of temperance and free self-restraints. Whoever fights with their help is crowned the winner in the end.
