Populations can only be maintained in good health if ecosystems remain intact. Professor McMichael studies and evaluates the above problems and the scientific uncertainty inherent in these issues in a broad biological, historical, and social context. The book also explores the relationships between the world’s rich and poor, and their effects on the environment. However, the primary focus is on the health of Homo sapiens in an ecological context.

Description

For the book : The planet at a critical juncture

The health—and perhaps the survival—of the human species is facing a new threat. Population growth, technological development, and increased consumption are straining the Earth’s capacity to absorb, renew, and repair. These global environmental problems pose health risks because, in addition to causing local pollution, they are also wearing down life-support systems. Have we, humans, become an “endangered species”? The risk of skin cancer and cataracts due to ozone depletion is quite obvious. Health is also at risk from heat waves and hurricanes related to the greenhouse effect. However, the indirect health impacts that come from climate change’s impact on food production and the spread of infectious diseases may prove more “insidious.” Similar risks include immunosuppression due to ultraviolet radiation, soil erosion due to overexploitation, depletion of water reserves, and the loss of genetic and biological resources that could be used to produce food and medicines. Additional health risks are created by the rapid growth of urban centers.
