Description

The treatise On the Incarnation of the Word by Athanasius the Great (written around 318 as a sequel to the similar Against Idols), deals in detail with the incarnation of the Word of God. Starting with the creation of the world out of nothing, it develops the fall of the first created beings, the misery that followed because people became indifferent to spiritual things and attached themselves to material goods, as well as their separation from God, which would result in their annihilation through their physical and spiritual death. God provided for man by revealing himself through the creations, the tradition of the Law, and the mission of the Prophets. And because these did not prove sufficient, the Word of God himself became human. He took on a body that could die in order to make it immortal through his resurrection. He defeated the demons and brought man back to the saving truth. He became human, so that we might be deified. The soul purified from passions can understand this truth.
