Description
In the context of his interpretative Homilies, Saint John Chrysostom dealt extensively with the Holy Bible. Choosing, preferably, hagiographic passages, he interprets and delves into them, without, as a rule, omitting constructive extensions. And this, because he usually speaks before a congregation and is interested in the spiritual cultivation and moral teaching of his listeners. Beneath the letter of the text, he often seeks various symbolisms. In the year 386 he delivered in Antioch a series of 9 Homilies, in which he interpreted the first chapters of Genesis, while two years later another series of 67 Homilies on the rest. This volume, “The creation of the world” includes Homilies B’-G’, which interpret verses 1-21 of chapter 1 of Genesis, that is, from the creation of heaven and earth, until the end of the fifth day of God’s creative work.
