Description

Symbols of Faith

How did our Church deal with all those heretical teachings that have preoccupied Christians from a very early age? Issues such as the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Trinity of God, the celebration of Easter, the marriage or celibacy of bishops, the divinity of the Holy Spirit, the two natures (divine and human) of Christ, whether the Virgin Mary is Christ-bearing or Theotokos, the autocephaly of the Churches, issues of ecclesiastical order and administration, whether Christ had one or two wills, the veneration of icons, etc., were dealt with in the Holy Spirit during the Ecumenical Councils. And the position of the Church was formulated in texts that are distinguished: In “terms”, when they concern doctrinal issues of faith, and in “canons”, when they regulate administrative matters.
The reader will find here collected from the first “Symbols of Faith” up to the dogmatic “terms” and the administrative “canons” of the seven Ecumenical Councils. Other relatively later texts will follow in time.
