Raising Children
The two treatises of St. Chrysostom On the Education of Children were not only useful in his time. The subject of education has always been very difficult. Most parents, while struggling to provide the necessities of life for their children, often even more than that, neglect their upbringing. In the two treatises contained here, St. Chrysostom calls on parents to discipline their children according to biblical examples and to endow them with the fear of God, which is a true wealth and treasure for life. He also provides instructions on many subjects, convincing every well-intentioned person of the correctness of his instructions. The reference he makes to vanity is justified by the fact that he considers it the cause of bad upbringing, and to almsgiving by the fact that its practice presupposes not wealth but good will, which is the fruit of proper upbringing.
