About the book : Easter and the ressurection

Among the celebratory Homilies of Saint Gregory of Nyssa are the three included in this issue. The first two are more extensive, the third relatively short. In the Homilie “On Holy Easter”, the way of celebration by Christians is described with clarity, but mainly the reservation about whether it is possible for dead bodies to be resurrected is refuted in an analytical and profound way. To this end, without excluding faith, which is a prerequisite, Gregory invokes a multitude of hagiographic testimonies, making use of both logic and experience. In the second “On the three-day deadline for the resurrection…” he answers the question – ancient and modern – of how Christ remained in the Tomb for three days and nights, since from the Friday he was buried until the dawn of one of the Saturdays, not so much time passes. His reflections, as he himself says, constitute both a training and a search, while the Homily contains other more practical thoughts and exhortations. Finally, in the third, “On the luminous and holy resurrection of the Lord,” he masterfully answers the question of when Christ was despised (during his Passion) and what his glorious resurrection brought to people who believe.
