Among the more than 250 interpretative Homilies of St. Chrysostom on the Old and New Testaments, 90 Homilies (memoirs) “To Saint Matthew the Evangelist” are included. The present issue contains Homilies B’ to IX, referring to the genealogy of the Lord, his conception and birth by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, the magi from Persia, the star that guided them, Herod, the adoration, the gifts, the flight into Egypt, the massacre of the infants. In each of his Homilies, the great preacher and shepherd interprets certain verses, basically following the following tactic: We respond with hagiographic and logical arguments to the “contradictions” that some well-meaning or half-educated people find in the sacred text. He points out and presents practical admonitions for the training of Christians, while he does not fail – according to his favorite method – to highlight basic truths of the Christian faith, to criticize the indifference of his listeners to spiritual matters and to urge them to intensify their struggle. The Homilies on the Evangelist Matthew were delivered in Antioch when Saint Chrysostom was still a presbyter, between the years 390-398 (most likely 390).
