Description

For the book : At Christmas and the lights

Among the celebratory sermons of Saint Gregory the Theologian are also the sermons LHI’ (On the Epiphany, this is the Birthday of the Savior) and LTH’ (On the Holy Lights). The first was probably delivered in 379 or 380 in Constantinople, and its beginning was used verbatim by the poet of the Canon of Christmas Christ is born, glorify Him – Christ is in heaven, answer Him… Gregory, in addition to the meaning of the feast of Christmas, also analyzes a number of other related topics (how Christians celebrate, the teaching of the creation of man, the fall and his salvation through the incarnation of the Word, the refutation of the accusations of heretics, our attitude after the Birth of Christ, etc.).
The second discourse was delivered in the same period, also in Constantinople. Its theological references here analyze -enshrined in hagiography- the theme of spiritual purification in relation to pagan purifications, the mystery of the Holy Trinity, the essence of the feast of the Lights, its symbolism, the types of baptisms, etc. To complete the issue, 31 selected Patristic excerpts on Christmas and the Lights are also included.
