The “Funeral Speech to His Mother” (by Saint Theodore the Studite) is a very vivid text that is related to the God-given renunciation of worldly things and the spiritual struggle of his mother Theoktistis to achieve her perfection. In the vivid narrative, Studite also lets his views on the subject of death and mourning pass through.

Description

For the book : A’ why the mourning in our lives?

This issue includes two sermons by Saint Gregory of Nyssa and one by Saint Theodore of Stondit, which are related to death and the mourning that accompanies it. In the sermon “Speech to the Fallen” (which, in order to make the title of the issue attractive, was attributed with the question “Why mourning in our lives?”), the Holy Father proves with convincing arguments that, in the final analysis, death is not a separation from the good, but a transition to the eternal good and that we should not be deceived by what is seen and perceived with our senses, but rather be attracted by what Jesus Christ promised us. The “Fabled Speech to Pulcheria” refers to the death of the young Pulcheria, daughter of Emperor Theodosius and Queen Placilla, who were distinguished for their piety. And it answers the ever-present question of all of us, why does God allow young children to pass away prematurely? The “Funeral Speech to His Mother” (by Saint Theodore the Studite) is a very vivid text that is related to the God-given renunciation of worldly things and the spiritual struggle of his mother Theoktistis to achieve her perfection. In the vivid narrative, Studite also lets his views on the subject of death and mourning pass through.
