Description
What attitude do the Fathers of the Church maintain towards politicians and other state officials? In a nutshell, we would say of the shepherd. One who is interested in the protection, service and improvement of the lives of citizens. Always, however, in combination with the benefit of the souls of rulers and subjects and their salvation. In the 20 Letters of Basil the Great contained here, this great ecclesiastical man, writing to political rulers, reveals his true interest in the social and everyday issues of Christians. His letters are full of kindness. In the two, moreover, Homilies of Saint Chrysostom “To Eutropius, eunuch, patrician and high priest”, delivered in the year 399, he defends the persecutor of the Church and himself, Eutropius, who had been removed from the office of prime minister and had taken refuge, as a suppliant, in the asylum of the cathedral of Constantinople (an asylum that he himself had abolished). Saint Chrysostom points out the futility of worldly things, the frequent and unpredictable changes in people’s lives and the need for leniency and forgiveness. He finds, of course, the opportunity to develop other interesting topics in his second speech.
